Brent Mason is the head coach of Elite Combat Academy and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Master Israel Gomes, co-founder of the American Killer Bees association. That lineage runs from Gomes to Carlos Lima, and from Lima to Carlson Gracie.
Before he coached fighters, he was one. Coach Mason competed as a professional MMA welterweight out of Shreveport from 2008 to 2011, finishing his last fight with a rear-naked choke. Today he is in the corner instead, coaching his fighters on regional MMA and kickboxing cards, most recently Real Deal Championship 28 at the Bossier City Civic Center.
He has been teaching the people of Shreveport to protect themselves for years. Talking with KTBS 3 about self-defense, his first rule was the simplest one: always be aware of your surroundings.
The lineage
A black belt is only as good as who tied it. Coach Mason's traces back to the Gracie family through Carlson Gracie.
